ANTI- PIRACY OPERATIONS IN SOUTH INDIA
The Southern India operations of
MPA commenced in the latter part of 2002.
It started with a conference attended by the Bangalore police wherein
training was imparted for conducting suo motu actions in the city. Since this time the anti-piracy operations
have been extremely successful in the South, with suo motto raids being
conducted in all the three states of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu
MPA operations in the south
started with Karnataka where all the wholesale/retail/libraries, video parlours
and cable TV were indulging in piracy.
BANGALORE
Esturi Videos, DVG Road, Basavanagudi: A suo motu raid was
conducted on this library in Gandhi Bazaar, in Basavanagudi, Bangalore by the
Basavanagudi Police and almost 250 VCDs of which 100 were MPA titles were
seized. One was arrested after the raid and charge sheet has already been
framed now. According to reports the
shop has now stopped dealing in piracy and has only original VCDs.
Video World, BDA Complex, Koramangala, Bangalore: This is the
biggest library in the area and the Koramangala police conducted a Suo Motu
raid in this shop. They seized 95 videocassettes and one was arrested during the
raid.
Sri Venkateshwara Enterprises, BDA Complex, Koramangala, Bangalore:
This is a small library in the same complex and a similar raid was conducted by
the Koramangala police and they were successful in seizing 50 videocassettes of
MPA titles.
Channel 9, Jayanagar, Bangalore: This is one of the biggest
libraries in the entire city. Jayanagar police conducted a suo motu raid and
seized almost 900 VCDs and 10 DVDs from the shop.
SS Videos, SP Road, Bangalore: This is a wholesale shop in the SP
Road, the hub of piracy in Bangalore. The S.J. Park police conducted a
successful raid in this shop and seized almost 1000 VCDs. The owner of the shop
was also arrested.
Sweetone Electronics, S.P.Road, Bangalore: This is also a wholesale
shop in the S.P. Road. The Ulsoorgate police conducted a raid and seized 1450
VCDs.
Mayuri Videos, S.P.Road, Bangalore: This is another big wholesale
shop in the S.P.Road. The S.J.Park
police conducted a raid here and seized more than 1000 VCDs.
There are five Head End operators
and around 1000 local cable operators in Bangalore. A meeting has also been held with the representatives of Head End
Operators Association, Cable TV Chamber of Commerce and Cable TV Local
Operators Association. The concerned
parties have assured attempts at reduction of pirate activities.
MANGALORE
The town has
an abundance of video parlours. The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mangalore Mr.
A.M. Shaikh, personally raided 2 shops (Pooja Videos, Kathri) on the 27th
of November and seized a DVD of the Movie “The Guru”.
The DSP
warned all the video parlours in locality of stringent action should they
continue to display pirate movies.
UDIPPI
Video
parlours are more prevalent in this district.
Following a meeting with the Superintendent of Police, he has instructed
the Circle Inspector to raid suo motu the parlours in Udippi as and when they
exhibit pirated movie.
DAVANGERE
Davanagere has an abundance of
video parlours, which have become a problem for the exhibitors. Acting on a tip
off the Davanagere police raided one video parlour and seized the DVD of
“Scorpion King”. The Superintendent of Police has assured more ex officio raids
as and when pirated movies are screened.
RAMANAGARA
This town has one retail shop and
three or four libraries dealing in piracy.
There are two cable TV’s. The Superintendent of Police has promised to
conduct suo motu raids on both the Cable TV and the libraries. The matter is being pursued further.
KOLAR GOLD FIELDS
This is a small town and four
video parlours that exhibit pirated movies. The Deputy Superintendent of Police
has promised actions against the parlours screening pirated movies.
Wholesale/retail shops and
libraries are the two forms of piracy in Kerala. The hub of piracy being Cochin
and Trivandrum.
COCHIN
On Commissioner of Police’s instructions, the Central Police Station conducted a Suo Motu raid on Sea Breeze, (a first ever suo motu raid in copyright cases here) a retail shop in GCDA Complex, Shanmugam Road, Cochin and seized 1100 vcds and 340 dvds. One person was arrested.
TRIVANDRUM
Welgates Marketing is the major
pirate in Trivandrum. A written complaint on various forms of piracy was
submitted to the Commissioner of Police following which the Commissioner has
promised to take the necessary steps.
CHENNAI
Chennai being the major port, the
wholesale market flourishes here. Tamil Nadu has the separate cell, the Video
Piracy Cell functioning under the Additional Director General of police Mr.
Munzni. A written complaint was submitted to the ADGP requesting him to take
immediate action in Burma Bazaar. Subsequent to the complaint, the Video Piracy
Cell conducted a Suo Motu raid in a shop in Burma Bazaar, Olympic Telecoms, C2.
C, Burma Bazaar, Chennai-1 and seized 95 pirated DVDs. One person was arrested.
The ADGP also suggested a
workshop for the police on Copyright laws and has asked MPA to conduct the same
sometime in the end of January or February.
